2025 MT. RWENZORI MARATHON MARKS NEW HEIGHTS FOR UGANDANATHLETICS AND TOURISM

A wave of excitement and celebration swept through Kasese District as the 2025 Tusker Lite Mt. Rwenzori Marathon unfolded in spectacular fashion on 23rd August 2025. Now in its fourth edition, the marathon attracted over 3,500 runners from 56 countries, marking a remarkable milestone in Uganda’s growing sports tourism landscape. The main 42km race was flagged off at the Equator Monument in Kikorongo, nestled within the iconic Queen Elizabeth National Park, giving athletes a once-in-a-lifetime experience of racing through some of Africa’s most breathtaking natural scenery. Other race categories were launched from the bustling heart of Kasese town, filling the streets with energy and excitement.
The event drew an impressive lineup of dignitaries and special guests, including the Deputy Speaker of the Republic of Kenya, Hon. Gladys Jepkosgei Boss Shollei; Uganda’s State Minister for Tourism, Wildlife and Antiquities, Hon. Martin Mugarra Bahinduka; and the State Minister for National Guidance, Hon. Godfrey Baluku Kabyanga. Also in attendance were heads of government agencies, MDAs, private sector partners, and members of both the local and international community, all gathered to celebrate this world-class event.
Backed by the Ministry of Tourism, Wildlife and Antiquities, the marathon has rapidly grown into one of Africa’s premier experience-driven tourism events. Its impact on the local economy was immediate and visible — accommodation facilities across Kasese were fully booked, restaurants were overflowing, and transport services saw a significant spike in demand. Local businesses thrived, reaffirming the marathon’s role as not only a sporting spectacle but also a powerful economic engine for the region.
In recognition of their incredible efforts, the top athletes were handsomely rewarded. Winners of the 42km race walked away with UGX 10 million, while champions of the 21km and 10km races received UGX 7 million and UGX 5 million respectively. The marathon continues to grow in prestige and participation, reaffirming Uganda’s position as a rising star in global sports tourism.
With its stunning landscapes, and passion driven communities, Uganda has once again proven that it is more than ready to host the world. The 2025 Tusker Lite Mt.Rwenzori Marathon has not only celebrated the strength and spirit of the runners but also told a compelling story of a nation harnessing the power of tourism, sport, and culture to shape a new narrative.
