Bwindi Impenetrable National Park has secured international recognition after being ranked the world’s third-best adventure destination, reaffirming the country’s leadership in conservation, sustainable tourism, and immersive wildlife experiences worldwide.
Uganda has once again stepped onto the world stage following the announcement at the TOURISE Global Tourism Awards in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, where Bwindi placed third after Ancash in Peru and the Galápagos Islands in Ecuador. The honour celebrates Uganda’s exceptional biodiversity, community-led conservation, and its reputation as a leading hub for adventure and nature tourism.
Speaking at the ceremony, Professor James Kalema, Chairman of the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) Board of Trustees, said the accolade reaffirms Uganda’s growing influence in global conservation and adventure tourism. He emphasised that Bwindi’s success illustrates how protecting natural heritage creates meaningful travel experiences while empowering surrounding communities. “This accolade is a powerful endorsement of Uganda's commitment to conservation-led tourism. Bwindi demonstrates how protecting nature can create meaningful adventure experiences while empowering communities and sustaining national development,” he noted.
The TOURISE Global Tourism Awards spotlight destinations that excel in sustainability, innovation, and visitor experience. They bring together tourism authorities, policymakers, and industry leaders committed to shaping the future of responsible travel, one that benefits both people and the planet.
Geographically positioned in the misty highlands of southwestern Uganda, Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site internationally celebrated for its thick montane rainforest, unique ecosystems, and spectacular biodiversity. But above all, Bwindi is world-famous for being home to the endangered mountain gorillas, Uganda’s flagship tourism product, and one of the most powerful wildlife attractions globally.
Uganda hosts over half of the world’s remaining mountain gorillas, with an estimated approximately 459 individuals in Bwindi alone, according to the most recent census. Combined with Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo, global mountain gorilla numbers now stand at just over 1,060, a remarkable conservation success story given their critically low population in the 1980s.
Gorilla trekking in Bwindi remains one of the world’s most profound wildlife experiences, attracting thousands of high-value visitors each year. The experience is intensely intimate, as it includes small groups hiking deep into the rainforest to spend an hour observing gorilla families in their natural habitat, a close encounter that blends thrill, humility, and awe.
The award positions Uganda as a must-visit destination for adventure travellers seeking authenticity, biodiversity, and sustainable tourism experiences. Beyond gorilla trekking, Bwindi offers birdwatching, nature walks, cultural immersions, and breathtaking scenery, making it one of Africa’s most complete ecotourism destinations.
