The Ministry of Tourism, Wildlife and Antiquities has commenced implementation of a
major capacity-building initiative targeting frontline tourism service providers operating
within Rwenzori Mountains National Park.
The Training of Trainers (ToT) programme, running from 20 th to 27 th February 2026, marks
the first phase of a broader project aimed at strengthening safety, professionalism, and service
excellence across the Rwenzori mountaineering value chain.
The project seeks to train 1,000 guides, cooks, rangers and porters across the Rwenzori
tourism value chain, in a strategic move aimed at strengthening human resource capacity,
enhancing visitor safety, and positioning the park as a professional and globally competitive
mountaineering destination.
The training is being conducted by Sentinel Outdoor Institute, an internationally recognised
outdoor training body, bringing global best practices and internationally aligned standards to
Uganda’s mountain tourism sector.
Rwenzori ToT Training Enters Implementation Phase as Tourism Ministry Strengthens
Mountaineering Standards. Twenty (20) carefully selected trainers are currently undergoing
intensive, practical, and internationally aligned instruction at the Uganda Wildlife Authority
(UWA) offices in Rwenzori.
Training of Trainers Phase Underway
This foundational cohort will serve as the technical backbone of the wider training rollout,
ensuring that global best practices are systematically cascaded throughout the mountain
tourism ecosystem.
Advanced, Internationally Benchmarked Curriculum
The ToTs are undertaking advanced modules designed to elevate operational safety and
leadership standards in high-altitude environments. The training covers:
Advanced Wilderness First Aid and CPR
Field Evacuation Criteria and Risk Management
Leave No Trace (LNT) Principles
Wilderness Emergency Response and Rescue Skills
Outdoor Leadership and Group Management
Patient Assessment, Documentation and Evacuation
Improvised Rescue and Splinting Techniques
Mountain Risk Anticipation and Prevention
Upon completion, the trainers will cascade these competencies to up to 1,000 frontline
personnel, significantly raising safety standards, service delivery, professionalism, and
overall visitor experience within the park.
Elevating Rwenzori’s Global Positioning
This intervention marks a critical milestone in strengthening safety systems and institutional
capacity within Uganda’s mountain tourism segment. By investing directly in frontline skills
and internationally recognized rescue standards, the Tourism Ministry is reinforcing
confidence among climbers, tour operators, and global travel markets.
The initiative forms part of broader efforts to enhance destination readiness and
competitiveness, ensuring that the Rwenzori continues to stand out as a premier high-altitude
adventure destination on the global stage.
Further updates will be shared as the training progresses and the cascade phase begins.
